We are about to move from a flat into a house with a garden. Is it a good idea to insure the plants and garden furniture?

This is actually a very good question because, according to some insurance companies, our gardens/patios/back yards contain valuable things and one in ten is more than likely to have items stolen from it. Another thing which people tend to disregard is the danger of damage from severe weather conditions and malicious vandalism, as well as things that can go wrong at barbecues and parties, particularly when there is alcohol involved! You will find that there are a wide range of insurance companies that now offer garden insurance.

Can I keep my furniture outside all year?

Yes you can keep your garden furniture outdoors all year round. The properties of Teak allow it to endure the most severe weather; this is why it is used as decking material on ships. What you must remember is that it will get dirtier in the winter months than furniture that is only left out during the summer and spring. When it comes to storing your garden furniture, we advise you to store it in an out-house, garden shed or garage. Please remember that a dramatic alteration in the humidity and heat can cause cracks in your garden furniture.

My furniture has cracks on the ends/is cracking?

Like all hardwood, Teak can lose its salts/minerals and as these minerals and salts evaporate, cracks will start to manifest on the end grain, the worst affected areas are usually table tops and the arms on our garden chairs. Unfortunately this is typical. In some cases the cracks will open wide, especially when the weather is hot. They will close up with rain or when the temperature is colder. These cracks will not have any affect on the solidity of your garden furniture and in the majority of cases; it will occur within the first couple of months but get no worse. Treating your garden furniture can help lessen the cracking.

My wooden garden furniture has gone or is going black? What can I do?

We always need to keep our outdoor furniture clean as muck builds up from all the dirt in the atmosphere. Areas that are affected most are generally table tops and the arms on our garden chairs. The black can be caused in some cases by too much oiling which brings on fungal growth. The first thing to do is to use timber cleaner or as an alternative, you can use soapy water and scrub it with a scourer that is non metallic. If you can’t remove the black, use sand paper that is of medium grade on the areas that are affected the worst.
